The district of Gondia came into existence by carving out the area from Bhandara district. The district is located in the North-Eastern part of Maharashtra and is bordered by the states of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.

Total population of the district according to census of 2001 is 12,00,151, of which male population comprises of 598447 and female population comprises of 601704. The literacy rate of the district is 67.67%.

Most of the geographical area is under forest and undeveloped. Agriculture is the main source of income the major crop produced is rice apart from this the other crops produced in the region are jowar, linseed, wheat and tur.

The district still suffers from the industrial development and this is the main reason of its backwardness. District is mainly famous for the production of Rice in an abundant quantity and there fore is also called as RICE CITY.

The district is divided into two subdivisions namely Gondia and Deori.  Each sub division has 4 talukas, 556 Grampanchayat 954 revenue villages exist in the district.  The district area is divided into six legislative assembly constituencies namely Gondia, Tiroda, Goregaon, Amgaon, Lakhandur and Sakoli.  Basically district is divided into 8 talukas and 8 Panchayat Samiti.  Only two municipalities exists at Gondia and Tiroda.

Wainganga river is the largest and most important river. Rivers like Bagh, Chulbandh, Gadhavi and Bavanthadi are the tributaries of river Vainganga.

Connectivity: Gondia is about 170 Kms by road from Nagpur of Vidarbha region. The district has road links to adjoining districts Chandrapur, Bhandara, Nagpur. It takes around 5 hour’s journey from Nagpur by State Transport Bus to reach Gondia. The length of the railway track from Gondia to Nagpur is 130 kms.
