With the 2.47% of the total geographical area of state of Maharashtra, the Jalna district holds the total area of 7,612 sq.kms. The district came into existence of May 1st, 1981 after extracting the tehsils of Jalna, Bhokardan, Jafrabad, and Ambad tehsils of Aurangabad and uniting them into one district Jalna. The district is located on the central part of Maharashtra in northern part of the Marathwada region. The district is surrounded by Parbhani and Buldhana districts in the east, Aurangabad on the west, Jalgaon in the north and Beed in the south.
The history of the district dates back to the period of Ramayana and it is believed that the place was called as Janakpur. After centuries this place was invaded by the Muslim merchant who was Julaha or weaver by the profession and the name of region was changed into Jalna.
During the regime of Akbar’s rule in India the Jagir was helf by one of his general Abul Fazl who made the region as the place of his stay for a short period. His endeavors were praised by the Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jha and he also favoured the development of the region because it was economically more beneficial then compared to Aurangabad. It was on his orders that a fort was constructed on the east of the town and still known as Mastgad. At present it accommodates the Municipal office of the district.
During the rule of Akbar land revenue of Jalna was collected by the Marathas. The region has witnessed the control of different rulers from time to time. For a long time it had been under the dominance of Shinde’s. During the war of Udgir in 1760 there was a conflict between the Shinde’s and Military forces of Pune in which the Chief of Pune military was killed. During 1803 it came under the control of British troops under the supervision of Stevenson’s.
At present the district serves as a Municipal town and is recognized as an important centre of handloom and power loom weaving. The handloom societies are working on the cooperative basis, the most famous handloom organization is Markandeva Handloom weaving society. Apart from this there are also cotton ginning and pressing factories and an agricultural market produce committee handling large quantities of all kinds of
agricultural produce, including cotton.
With an objective of rapid industrial development government is planning to initiate a master plan to encourage the establishment of small and large- scale industrial units. Under this plan Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has set up an industrial area in Jalna consisting of large-scale, medium scale and small scale industries.
Jalna industrial area has a large number of steel rolling mills, a unit manufacturing ball bearings, agro based units like dal mills and most significant being large number of seed manufacturing units; Mahyco, Mahindra, Bejo-Shital are some of them. The MIDC has recently anounced to setup bio technology park (BT Park) at Jalna with the help of private sector units. This park will give a tremendous boost to the BT sector in the backward areas of Marathvada.
