The district of Washim came into existence on July 1
st 1998. The district is located in the Vidharbha region of
Maharashtra and covers an area of 5150 sq. km. In the ancient times the district of Washim was called as Vatsagulma and was the capital of King Wakata of Vatsagulma dynasty, who was later invaded by the ruler of Vakataka Dynasty. Later in the year 1905 the district of Washim was divided into two separate districts Yeotmal and Akol district.
The district is divided into two major sub divisions, which are further divided into 6 talukas namely Mangrulpir, Manora, Karanja, Washim, Risod and Malegaon. There are total of 789 villages coming under the district of Washim. The population according to the census of 2001 was 10202126.

Tourist Destinations: The district of Washim is not an old district thus there are not many tourist destinations to visit. But the district is considered as the best place of pilgrimage for devotees. The major temples of the district are Balaji Mandir, Padmateerth, Antariksha Parshwanath Jain mandir, Shri Nrusimha Saraswati Swami Maharaj(Guru Mandir) Karanja, Shri Sakharam Maharaj Temple Loni Taluka Risod, Shri Nath Nange Maharaj Temple Dawha Taluka Malegaon, Pohara DeviTalukaManora and Chamunda Devi.
