The state has the best road connectivity in India. The state is privileged with the largest road network of India along with highest number of National Highways. The most of the places of the state are having well maintained roads and national highways. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is responsible for the maintenance and development of road transport throughout the state, under which buses runs, popularly called ST for State Transport, linking most of the towns and villages in and around the state with a large network of operation.
National Highways 3, 4,6,8,9 and 17 connects Mumbai with the rest of the country. The national highway like NH 8 connects Delhi with Mumbai and NH 4 connects Chennai with Mumbai. The local buses run by the Bombay Electric Supply and Transportation Undertaking, or the BEST. Another source of transport which is commonly used by people and which is considered as the life line of Mumbains is buses run by B.E.S.T. These buses have reserved seats for ladies, senior citizens and handicap persons. The main reason to use these means of transport is that they are easily accessible, convenient, cheap and on the time.
Other than the state of Maharashtra has well equipped and developed means of transport facilities whether it is bus, train, taxi or autorickshaw. According to an assumption almost 90% of the population uses these public transport facilities to reach their destinations. MSRTC is the third largest bus service provider in the country and among one of the largest fleet owners in the world, operating a fleet of approximately 16000 buses.
